Background

From Architecture to Real-World Solutions

I've always believed that living small doesn't mean compromising on quality. It's about understanding what matters and making intentional choices. My journey into compact living started during my Architecture degree at NUS, where I focused my thesis on efficient small-space design in high-density urban environments.

After graduating, I spent 8 years working with Singapore-based property developers. I managed renovation projects, consulted on space-maximization strategies, and got hands-on experience with hundreds of studio apartments. But the real turning point came when I relocated to Queenstown for 3 years. That's when I experienced compact living firsthand—not as an architect reviewing blueprints, but as someone actually living in a small space and navigating the local rental market.

Living here changed everything. I saw what works and what doesn't. I learned what renters actually care about versus what developers think they should care about. At Compact Living Hub Pte Ltd, I combine my architectural background with real-world tenant experience to create guides that are grounded in specific data, local market knowledge, and the stories of people who've successfully made small-space living work.

What I Do

Core Areas of Expertise

I focus on practical solutions that actually work in real apartments, not theoretical design concepts.

Space Optimization

Strategic layouts that maximize functionality without feeling cramped. I work with actual dimensions and real furniture, not idealized floor plans.

Storage Solutions

Finding creative ways to store your stuff without making everything look like a storage unit. Vertical thinking, smart systems, and honest assessments.

Queenstown Rental Market

Deep knowledge of what's available in Queenstown, which neighborhoods work for different lifestyles, and how to navigate the local rental landscape as a single.

Studio Living Design

Creating distinct zones, managing noise and privacy, choosing the right furniture scale, and building a home that doesn't feel like a shoebox.

Practical Design Thinking

I'm not interested in design trends that don't work in real life. Everything I recommend has been tested in actual apartments with real people living there.

Data-Driven Guidance

Market research, rental trends, cost analysis, and performance metrics. I back up recommendations with actual numbers, not hunches.

My Approach

"Living small doesn't mean living poorly. It means making intentional choices about what matters, designing spaces that actually work, and understanding that a 350-square-foot studio can be a genuinely good home if it's designed with purpose."

— Marcus Lim

Honest & Practical

I don't sugarcoat the challenges of small-space living. But I also don't accept that those challenges can't be solved. Every recommendation comes from real experience, not design theory.

Data-Driven

I back up what I write with research, market data, and metrics. When I say something works, I can show you the numbers and the evidence behind it.

Tenant-Focused

I've lived in small spaces. I know what it feels like to be frustrated by poor design or poor decisions. Everything I write is from the perspective of someone actually living there.
